Unless I was in a coma at the time, then there never was a taboo against debating immigration, just as there is none now against criticising Islam.
The people who alleged the first taboo only ever did so by breaking it, and the people who allege the second taboo only ever do so by breaking it. Anyone would think that the first taboo never existed, and the second taboo did not exist.
There is a real case against open borders, not that anyone is making it at the moment. Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it.
