Why shouldn't MPs vote on their own pay? No one else does. But no one else votes definitively on the Statute Law, either.
If there are bad MPs, then the answer is to get ourselves better MPs, not to farm out their responsibilities to unaccountable quangos of the kind of people who end up on accountable quangos.
Times change, and it is perfectly clear that these days MPs would never propose giving themselves a 10 per cent pay increase at a time of pay restraint and service cuts for everyone else, if ever.
