Mistaken Identity
Quite so.
He was never well-known to anyone except political anoraks, and not even to all of them.
If these victims named "a senior Conservative figure from the Thatcher years", then it cannot have been him.
Surprised you are not lining up with Charles Moore, Peter Wilby (I am told you know them both slightly), and your full blown mates and journalistic godfathers Peter Hitchens and Rod Liddle. All saying Savile was probably or definitely innocent and definitely would not have been convicted. Or does kicking Thatcher take priority?
Oh, I can see their points. Rod also has a very good point this week in his Spectator about the totally different treatment of Denis MacShane and David Laws.
