Does Lord Ahmed have £10 million? I greatly doubt it. This was a rhetorical trick, essentially a joke. Not a very good one. But, with certain magnificent exceptions, those made in political speeches rarely are.
Note, not without some glee, that the problem was saying this sort of thing about Obama. Saying it about Bush or Blair was perfectly acceptable.
The big two parties, especially, do need to get very serious indeed about the connections that certain figures have in Pakistan. I am very glad if this is now starting to happen. It would not be a moment too soon. But such connections are not only to Pakistan.
What about your "Commonwealth" connections in many parts of the world? What about your connections to the anticapitalist, isolationist Old Right in the US and to the Catholic conservatives among New Deal Democrats? What about your connections to traditional Gaullists and those of similar views among Socialist Party members and the non-Gaullist Right? What about your connections to Christian Arab and Christian Slavic nationalists all over the Middle East and Eastern Europe?
