If Berlusconi really is planning not to contest Italy's forthcoming election, then the way may finally be opening back up for politicians in the spirit of those Italians whose attachment to Catholic Social Teaching led them to admire Keynesianism and the domestic policies of the Attlee Government while remaining highly sceptical of NATO and instead preferring Italy to act as a bridge between East and West in the tradition of the Latin culture's defence of Biblical-Classical civilisation, a mission also historically committed to and exercised by the Slavs.
