What is it with the Conservative Party and Black Wednesdays? I am counting down the hours to the next one. Yes, the one in 1992 got us out of Thatcher's ERM. But it made the subsequent General Election result a foregone conclusion, and so will tomorrow. In fact, 2015 or sooner looks like being the Election that 1997 would have been if John Smith had lived. Just so long as David Miliband doesn't poison the wedding cake, or spike any drinks on the stag night.
And what would be in my Budget Box? A letter ceding the Chancellorship to Lord Skidelsky, an SDP founder-member who refused to join the Lib Dems, a Conservative frontbencher until he condemned the bombing of Kosovo, and now a Crossbench Peer who is not only a stalwart of Balanced Migration, but also the author of the forthcoming and gloriously titled Keynes: The Return of the Master. David Blanchflower could be Chief Secretary to the Treasury. If we are going to have inflation anyway, then we might as well get full employment and lasting public works out of it.
