Political prisoner, activist, journalist, hymn-writer, emerging thinktanker, aspiring novelist, "tribal elder", 2019 parliamentary candidate for North West Durham, Shadow Leader of the Opposition, "Speedboat", "The Cockroach", eagerly awaiting the second (or possibly third) attempt to murder me.
The evidence is mounting that the violent Sunni extremists were always most interesting in killing native Iraqi Shi'ites, Christians, and members of other religious groups, and not in setting up some kind of base to attack the West, even if that was a secondary goal.
This runs against the argument that we had to “fight them there, so we don’t have to fight them here.” Of course, these Sunni extremists wouldn’t have a presence in Iraq had the U.S. and its allies not invaded in the first place.
