Based, that is, on the Treaty of Rome. There are those who take such a view, sometimes remarking along such lines as "at least the EU's atheism is Catholic atheism", and identifying the EU as a bulwark against Americanisation. But America has behind this project from the outset, and the EU now even has a separate entry in the CIA World Factbook. Making the EU an expression of Christendom would require all manner of institutional changes that are simply not on offer, nor will they ever be. Instead, we must concentrate on things that we can do here in our own country. Not withdrawal, in the negotiations surrounding which we should be bogged down until the end of time, and which brings on certain people's nervous tick about that most flawed and foreign of devices, "a referendum, a referendum, a referendum".
No, the restoration of the supremacy of British over EU law, its use to repatriate agricultural policy and to restore our historic fishing rights in accordance with international law, the requirement that in order to have any effect in the United Kingdom all EU law pass through both Houses of Parliament as if it had originated in one or other of them, the requirement that British Ministers adopt the show-stopping Empty Chair Policy until such time as the Council of Ministers meets in public and publishes an Official Report akin to Hansard, the disapplication in the United Kingdom of any ruling of the European Court of Justice or of the European Court of Human Rights (or of the "Supreme Court") unless confirmed by a resolution of the House of Commons, and the disapplication in the United Kingdom of anything passed by the European Parliament but not by the majority of those MEPs certified as politically acceptable by one or more seat-taking members of the House of Commons.
What are we waiting for?
