On immigration, I have an idea: no union card, no job.
Do you want to control immigration, or not? The present situation could not have arisen in the days when this sort of thing obtained. But this was no different in principle from requiring a passport or a work permit.
Except that, this way, you would also know that the bearers were properly trained and certified to do the job. Meaning, as much as anything else, that they could speak English to the necessary level, and were fully appraised of their rights as workers in this country.
Good idea, Mr. Lindsay. So many folks complain about there being "no good workmen anymore." Well, you get what you pay for. Is anybody surprised that cheap immigrant labor is usually inferior to native union labor?
God help the left if this is the best you can come up with. Forget nationalisation. Union control via the closed shop is utterly unelectable. Anyway, it's a surefire way to kill an industry, as training and investment are sacrificed at the alter of overmanning and keeping unemployable placemen in jobs. Look at the average council workforce.
Why should people be forced to join a union if they don't want to?

ReplyDeleteI hope that you enjoyed the Spandau Ballet reunion tour, since you are clearly still living in the Eighties.
