But for how much longer?
It really is not a good idea to have two different national flags for ethnic reasons.
Bolivia would have been McCain's Georgia. Last September, the American Ambassador was expelled for fomenting separatism. The rich, white eastern provinces of Bolivia are on the brink of a Rightist secession.
These are not people who speak English as their first language, as the South Ossetians speak Russian. Nor are they American citizens, as the South Ossetians are Russian citizens.
But under Sarah Palin, or Glenn Beck, or whoever the Once Grand Old Party managed to put up, not just diplomatic recognition, but military intervention, would be guaranteed. After all, is this not the backyard, the near abroad?
Just as well that no such candidate could possibly win.
Another point needs to be made. As The West recedes, there are stranded European populations throughout the world. So if the Spaniards of Bolivia wish to secede why not recognize their right to have an organic culturally coherent nation. The same goes for the stranded whites in places like South Africa?
ReplyDeleteThere is no part of South Africa that is predominantly white, or anything remotely approaching. The Afrikaaners and the English-speakers would never agree among themselves.
ReplyDeleteWhy not let the blacks secede from the US?
I suspect, to put it no more strongly than that, that the whites in Bolivia are a lot more closely related to the Indians than they care to admit. Again, much like America. Or South Africa, if you look hard enough.
