Worthy of Worthing

The Any Questions audience in Worthing, hardly the crucible of the revolution, fulsomely applauded Tony Benn when he called for the nationalisation of the utilities, with only a few half-hearted claps when someone called Damian Green trotted out the tired old Thatcherite "wasn't it all awful?" line. It was a a lot better then than it is now, and everybody knows it.

Benn was just as warmly received when he condemned the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, when he called for the cost of Trident to spent on "battle armour and trucks for the Army" instead, and when he denounced identity cards.

This is what Britain, including Tory Britain, wants. And only we are offering it. Only we even aspire to be worthy of Worthing.
