"Feds"

A teenage character on last night's EastEnders repeatedly referred to the Police as "the Feds". I have written before about how media-class London thinks that it is New York. Does working-class London now labour under the same misapprehension? Or is this a media misrepresentation of it? Like, one can only hope, a great deal else on EastEnders.
