Liberty
Since we now appear to have no idea what prisons are for, they have ceased to serve any useful purposes, despite the absolute necessity of serious punishment both by means of, and during, imprisonment. So we read this harrowing stuff from Peter Hitchens, about the treatment in prison of a man “convicted” on a mere majority verdict, and thus, by definition, not convicted beyond reasonable doubt. Majority verdicts simply have to go.
