Well might you wonder why a Muslim would wish to be a cocktail waitress in the first place.
But the Muslim waitress who has refused to wear a “revealing” dress in that capacity, in an establishment where “waitresses” were routinely propositioned by customers with the offer of payment, offers a lesson to us all.
While we continue to treat and regard such places as mere “cocktail bars”, then we are heading for a backlash. And if we fail to provide that very necessary backlash from within our own tradition, then it will be provided for us.

House Prices To Fall By Ten Per Cent
Let joy be unconfined.
The explosion in house prices has meant that most younger middle or upper-working-class people stand no chance of living out the middle-aged peak of their powers in properties remotely resembling the ones in which they grew up.
"Bricks and mortar" do not, at least ordinarily, constitute an "investment". They constitute a place to live. If we are now being forced back to acknowledging that truth, then about time, too.

Rupert Murdoch has linked up with another giant of Australian business, TNT, in its bid to compete with Britain’s state-owned postal service Royal Mail.
Transport and delivery company TNT has entered Britain’s letter market with its TNT Premier service which guarantees delivery in 48 hours and handles one million items a week.
As its service expands and the market opens up, however, TNT and other private mail providers have complained about Royal Mail’s “dirty tricks” and uncompetitive behaviour.
Murdoch’s pay TV network BSkyB is the latest of five major customers to defect from Royal Mail to TNT. BSkyB’s link with TNT strengthens Murdoch’s ties with the company.
TNT trucks are used by Murdoch’s News Limited newspapers in Britain and drove through the picket lines of striking printers in London during industrial disputes in the early 1990s.

The Parliamentary Road
At least the EU has today admitted that trying to make the British use the metric system is a waste of time. We should now resume the teaching of both systems side by side, which would greatly improve the numeracy standards that collapsed as a result of metrication and (massively inflationary) decimalisation, which latter is of course irreversible.
But we do not need the EU to make us work sensible, safe, healthy hours. Or, at least, we wouldn’t. If our Parliament contained a proper Labour Party.
