Squaring Up

You cannot invade, occupy, take over, or interfere in yourself. But the repression in Hong Kong is as reprehensible as it would be in any other city in China, where Hong Kong is the eleventh or twelfth largest city.

At this rate, protest in Hong Kong, like the Tiananmen Square demonstration that it sought to commemorate, will soon be as illegal as it was under British rule. And it was thoroughly illegal under British rule. There was a reason why there was no resistance to the handover.

Not only that, but at this rate, protest in Hong Kong, like the Tiananmen Square demonstration that it sought to commemorate, will soon be as illegal as it was about to become in Britain.

Like the noisy inhabitants of Mazar-i-Sharif, the noisy inhabitants of Hong Kong should count themselves lucky that they did not have to contend with the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.
