In Custody

If custodial sentences of less than six months are to be abolished "except for violent and sexual offences", then custodial sentences of less than six months are clearly being handed down for violent and sexual offences, and will continue to be so.

This is Rory Stewart's pitch to be next Leader but one of the Conservative Party. Yes, this. And yes, the Conservative Party. It might very well work, too. It was the Conservative Party that effectively cut almost all prison sentences in half from the second that they were imposed.

I am all for being tough on crime, provided that the law itself is just, and provided that conviction beyond reasonable doubt really does have to be conviction beyond reasonable doubt. Neither of those things is the case at present.

Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. It has become a local commonplace that I am on 30-30-30 with Labour and the Conservatives here at North West Durham, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post. I will stand for this seat, if I can raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
