"And More Than 70 Other Countries"

There are not 70 other countries like Switzerland. Most of them are markedly different from that, in numerous particulars. Notice the emphasis on Switzerland, because, at least if they had to, then most people in Britain could probably live with free movement from there. But there are not 70 other countries like Switzerland.

Then again, where are these post-Brexit trade deals? Liam Fox had one job. The Conservative Right is always like this. The occasional appointments to the Cabinet as sops to it have always been, either just rubbish, or a very great deal worse than that.

Interviewed as a Leadership candidate, before he went down to the two-to-one defeat that Theresa May has just visited upon the same faction, John Redwood was asked which of his supporters he intended to appoint to the Cabinet. "Teresa Gorman in the Cabinet? Tony Marlow in the Cabinet?" Essentially the same question continues to present itself. It presented itself in relation to Redwood's own noticeably brief and calamitous time around the Cabinet table.

No one could sanely suggest that Barry Gardiner would be a worse International Trade Secretary than Fox has turned out to have been. No one could sanely suggest that anyone would be a worse International Trade Secretary than Fox has turned out to have been. Anyone, that is, apart from Chris Grayling.

Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. It has become a local commonplace that I am on 30-30-30 with Labour and the Conservatives here at North West Durham, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post. I will stand for this seat, if I can raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
